331 words
In an applicating machine for applying a carrier stock to containers in which the carrier stock is made of a resilient plastic material and comprises a longitudinally extending series of transversely arranged pairs of container encircling bands which are transversely stretchable for application to pairs of containers and in which the machine is adapted to pass a series of pairs of containers therethrough for receiving said carrier stock in a multi-packaging arrangement, the improvement of a rotating drum assembly for receiving said carrier stock and stretching and applying said carrier stock to said containers, said drum assembly comprising a pair of spider wheels mounted in a parallel spaced apart relationship for rotation about a horizontal axis in said machine above said series of pairs of containers, a plurality of jaw stations mounted in a parallel side-by-side relationship on and about the periphery of said spider wheels with the longitudinal axes of said jaw stations arranged parallel to the axis of rotation of said spider wheels, each of said jaw stations comprising two pairs of jaws arranged in a side-by-side relationship along the longitudinal axis of said jaw station and with one pair of said jaws on each side of the longitudinal center of said jaw station, whereby the adjacent jaws on each side of the longitudinal center of said jaw station are inside jaws and the other jaws are outside jaws of each pair of jaws, each of said jaw stations having means mounting said pairs of jaws for rectilinear movement independently of each other along the longitudinal axis of said jaw station, cam means for each jaw for moving each jaw responsive to the rotation of said spider wheels, and said cam means for each jaw being arranged and formed to produce substantially greater movement of the outer jaws relative to the inner jaws between the rotary position of said spider wheels whereat said jaws receive said carrier stock and immediately before said carrier stock is applied to said containers.

Dependent Claim
105 words
In the improvement of a rotating drum assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein each of said jaw stations comprises a base plate mounted on the periphery of said spider wheels, a support member secured to each end of said base plate to upstand therefrom radially outwardly of the axis of rotation of said spider wheels, a pair of rods secured between the upstanding ends of said support members, and each of said jaws having a pair of holes therethrough with said pair of rods jouRnaled through said holes to carry said jaws for rectilinear movement on said base plate and between said support members.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim

In the improvement of the rotating drum assembly as defined in claim 2, wherein each of said jaw stations further comprises a pair of operating rods for each jaw, one end of each pair of operating rods connected to one of said jaws, said operating rods for the jaws on one side of the longitudinal center of said jaw station being journaled through the support member on that side of the longitudinal center of said jaw station, the operating rods for the jaws on the other side of said longitudinal center of said jaw station being journaled through the support member on that side of the longitudinal center of said jaw station, and said cam means being connected to the extending ends of said operating rods for moving each jaw responsive to the rotation of said spider wheels.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
89 words
In the improvement of a rotating drum assembly as defined in claim 3, wherein said cam means comprises a cam follower assembly for each pair of operating rods of each jaw station, and four annular cam members fixedly mounted in said machine concentrically about the axis of rotation of said spider wheels, and each of said cam follower assemblies of each jaw station cooperating with one of said cam members to move each jaw of each jaw station rectilinearly independently of the other jaws of each said jaw station.
