Abstract CARBON MONOXIDE AND METHANOL ARE REACTED IN GASEOUS OR LIQUID PHASE TO METHYL FORMATE AT ELEVATED PRESSURE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ALKALINE CATALYST AND OF SUFFICIENT HYDROGEN TO PERMIT THE UNREACTED CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE REACTION MIXTURE TO BE CONVERTED TO METHANOL, THE METHANOL BEING RECYCLED TO THE METHYL FORMATE SYNTHESIS IN CONTINUOUS OPERATION.
