Abstract
Abstract A hand held optical reader and apparatus for reading an octal digital code which contains a data digit field, an error checking count field and a parity field. The reader is designed for selfpositioning over a code bearing label and the apparatus comprises simple logical circuitry to insure the correct reading of the optical code.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
161 words
An optical reader for reading an n row coded label comprising: a. a housing having a first surface means for slidably contacting said coded label, said first surface having n apertures, each aperture positioned for alignment with a row of said label, wherein n is an integer greater than 1, b. n light sources, each Source associated with one of said apertures and positioned within said housing closely adjacent to said associated aperture and aligned for transmitting light through said associated aperture, c. n photodetectors, each photodetector corresponding to one aperture and associated photocell each photodetector positioned within said housing closely adjacent to said corresponding aperture and aligned to receive light through said corresponding aperture, d. means within said housing for transmitting signals from said photodetectors to signal receiving means positioned outside of said housing, and e. a plurality of ridges on said first surface for slidably positioning the reader and coded label for alignment of said rows with said apertures.
