Abstract A PHENOL WHICH IS UNSUBSTITUTED AT THE POSITION PARA TO THE HYDROXY GROUP OR UNSUBSTITUTED AT AT LEAST ONE OF THE POSITIONS ORTHO TO THE HYDROXY GROUP IS DISSOLVED IN A SOLVENT, IN THE ABSENCE OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE AND CATALYSTS, AND WHILE COOLING TO A TEMPERATURE BELOW 30* C. IS REACTED WITH DISULFUR DICHLORIDE. THE SOLVENT IS AN ACID AMIDE WHOSE NITROGEN ATOMS ARE COMPLETELY ALKYLATED. POLYTHIOBISPHENOLS ARE OBTAINED IN HIGH YIELD.
