Abstract

Abstract An illustrative embodiment of the present invention includes an acoustic well logging sonde having four articulated arm members disposed at quadrant intervals about a central tubular body member and having an acoustic transmitting transducer disposed on the lower portion of the body member. Two of the diametrically disposed arms carry a pair of acoustic receiving transducers displaced longitudinally from each other while the other two diametrically opposed arms each carry a single acoustic receiving transducer. A switching arrangement is provided for selecting groups of four of the six articulated transducers for making either cement bond log measurements or acoustic travel time measurements.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 139 words
Wall engaging acoustic pad apparatus for use in acoustic well logging of both open and cased boreholes, comprising: a generally trough-shaped support member, the open side thereof being adapted to face outwardly toward tHe wall of a borehole; an acoustic receiving transducer element positioned within said support member and having an inwardly facing side and an outwardly facing side; a massive backing member having relatively poor acoustical transmission properties disposed in touching contact with said inwardly facing side of said transducer element; acoustically absorbent means interposed between said support member and said backing member for acoustically insulating said transducer element from said support member; protective covering means positioned over the open side of the trough-shaped member and said outwardly facing side of said transducer element; and outer acoustically low noise wall engaging means disposed over said protective covering means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 139 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said wall engaging means comprises a layer of plastic material having a plurality of longitudinally extending skid surfaces on the external surface thereof, said skid surfaces affording a relatively noiseless contact surface for engagement with the wall of a borehole.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said acoustic receiving transducer element comprises a disc shaped piezoelectric element.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said protective covering means comprises an open work, zig-zag metallic member which transmits acoustic energy relatively slowly.
