Abstract

Abstract This invention is concerned with dovetail fixtures for clamping and holding orthogonally disposed workpieces and for guiding a cutting tool. A slotted guide member in the form of a comb or template is held against one of the workpieces to guide a router or similar cutting tool as the bit traces the dovetail pattern. A different cutter guiding template is employed herein. In addition novel workpiece locating members are movably attached to both the horizontal and the vertical work-receiving surfaces for spacing workpieces relative to each other during cutting.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 378 words
A dovetail fixture for guiding a cutting tool in cutting mortises and tenons including a frame equipped with a horizontal work-receiving surface and a vertical work-receiving surface, the surfaces being adapted to support workpieces in orthogonal positions with the end of a horizontal workpiece in abutting relation with the end of a vertical workpiece, a first clamping means adapted to clamp the horizontal workpiece against the horizontal work-receiving surface, a second clamping means adapted to clamp the vertical workpiece against the vertical work-receiving surface in said abutting positions, a cutter guide member in the form of a template having one of its edges formed with a first series of guide slots forming a plurality of fingers of one size along that edge, and a second edge formed with a second series of guide slots forming a plurality of fingers of a different size along that edge, the pitch of the guide slots, and their depth from the tip of the finger to the base of the finger of the second series thus being different from the pitch and depth of guide slots of the first series, the template being adapted to overlie one of the workpieces and to be clamped thereupon in a position such that the outer edges of the fingers are in alignment with the outer surface of the workpiece, each finger of a given series having a groove thereacross near the inner ends of the entrance slots forming a transverse channel across the fingers adapted to receive and retain a guide band, a guide band adapted to be held in said transverse channel, spanning guide slots between fingers, workpiece locating members movably attached to both horizontal and vertical work-receiving surfaces, each workpiece locating member having a plurality of positioning surfaces extending perpendicular to its Workreceiving surface to support a workpiece thereagainst, means for spacing vertical positioning surfaces of locating members on the horizontal work-receiving surface relative to those on the vertical work-receiving surface to correspond to the template slot size and to stagger the workpieces with respect to each other in their operating positions to cut a dovetail tenon in one workpiece and by the same operation to cut a corresponding mortise in the other workpiece, and means for locking members in their operating positions.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 378 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 1 wherein the guide template overlies the horizontal workpiece.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 2 wherein end sections of the template adjacent both outer guide slots have grooves in alignment with grooves across the fingers to receive ends of the guide band.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein the width of the guide band is equal to the width of the transverse grooves.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 60 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein the width of the guide band is equal to the width of the transverse groove in the end sections and across at least one finger, the band having marginal recessed sections along one edge therebetween so that the width of the guide band across entrance grooves is narrower than the transverse groove width.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein the workpiece locating members are held in their operating positions by pins.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein each workpiece locating member is provided with a projection seating in a corresponding depression in the work-receiving surface.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein the cutter guiding template is rectangular, the guide slots being along the two opposite long edges thereof.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein the cutter guiding template is square, the guide slots being along two edges perpendicular to each other.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
The dovetail fixture of claim 3 wherein means are included for securing said fixture to a workbench.
