Abstract
Abstract An anesthesia apparatus having a negative pressure relief valve mounted on an anesthetic gas conduit to prevent excessive negative pressure levels. The valve is provided with a handle for manual operation to vent positive pressure increase and is also provided with a valved connection to a vacuum line to vent alternatively any positive pressure increase into a closed vacuum system.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
217 words
In an anesthesia apparatus having an anesthetic gas conduit line with an inhalation end from which a patient receives an anesthetic gas mixture and an exhalation end into which the patient exhales carbon dioxide and any unabsorbed anesthetic gas, said gas conduit line further having a rebreathing bag, a carbon dioxide absorbing cannister, check valves to prevent patient''s intake of exhaled gases and to maintain the flow of anesthetic gas mixture towards the patient, a vaporizer chamber for the anesthetic, an anesthetic gas inlet and a relief valve for discharging preset gas pressure overloads out of the conduit line, the improvement which includes a gas diverting body member mounting a negative pressure relief valve, said gas diverting body member having a passageway communicating with the conduit line, an elongated tubular member mounted at one end to said gas diverting body member and mounted at the other end to a vacuum source to provide communication between said passageway and vacuum source, and said negative pressure relief valve having a chamber communicating with said passageway and means operable to communicate the chamber with atmospheric pressure upon development of negative pressures in the gas conduit line to thereby protect the patient against occurance of negative gas pressures and operable to close said chamber when said negative pressure condition is relieved.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
39 words
In an anesthetic apparatus which includes the features of claim 1 above, wherein said negative pressure relief valve includes a valve assembly to regulate flow of anesthetic gases into said elongated tubular member under urgings of the vacuum source.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
In an anesthesia apparatus which includes the features of claim 2 above, wherein said valve assembly includes a needle valve to selectively vary an opening leading to the elongated tubular member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
27 words
In an anesthetic apparatus which includes the features of claim 1 above, wherein said negative pressure valve includes a manually accessible means to open said communicating means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
67 words
In an anesthesia apparatus which includes the features of claim 4 above, wherein said manually accessible means is an externally extending element joined to a closure, means biasing the closure to close said communicating means, said closure being automatically opened when atmospheric pressure oversomes said biasing means, and said externally extending element allowing manual opeNing of the closure irrespective of negative pressure levels in the anesthesia apparatus.
