Abstract

Abstract Inorganic materials with unique chemical and/or physico-chemical properties are obtained by subjecting mixtures of reactants such as metal and ceramic powders and other particulate materials to attritive action. The reactants are activated by mechanical means by highly energized attritive action and reacted either simultaneously or in substantial part thereafter. In some embodiments a liquid continuum may be present, while in other embodiments the absence of a liquid continuum is preferred. The attritive action is preferably continued for a substantial time after a minimum particle size is attained. Further, means are provided in the attritor apparatus to decrease or prevent caking of solid materials in the bottom of the apparatus.
