Abstract LUBRICATING OILS HAVING IMPROVED CHARACTERISTICS MAY BE SYNTHESIZED BY POLYMERIZED CERTAIN LINEAR ALPHA OLEFINES IN THE PRESENCE OF AN INORGANIC CATALYST SYSTEM COMPRISING: (A) A COMPOUND OF A TRANSITION METAL FROM THE IV TO THE VIII GROUP OF THE PERIODIC SYSTEM, AND (B) A COMPOUND OF ALUMINUM WHICH IS A LINEAR POLYMER OF POLYIMINIC NATURE HAVING THE FORMULA: -(AL(-H)-N(-R))N- WHEREIN N IS A NUMBER NOT HIGHER THAN 50 AND R IS A HYDROCARBON RADICAL.
