Abstract
Abstract The penetrating forward nose of a Mole is structurally decoupled from the body in this invention to reduce fatigue and shock effects on the body. The nose and body are connected through a compliant sleeve in one embodiment. In a second, the nose is slidably mounted on the body outer shell, and subanvil means are interposed between the hammer and nose.

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim
105 words
An earth-penetrating device comprising: an elongated missilelike body including an exterior cylindrical forward mounting surface; a nose comprising an interior cylindrical mounting surface of greater diameter than said exterior mounting surface of said body; an elongated generally cylindrical compliant sleeve bonded between all said portions of said mounting surfaces, said sleeve having a compliance corresponding to a spring constant of substantially 500,000 pounds per inch thereby to permit axial movement of said nose with respect to said body through a predetermined displacement; an interior anvil in the forward portion of said nose; and reciprocating means in said body for applying periodic impacts to said anvil.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
37 words
Apparatus pursuant to claim 1, wherein said interior surface of said nose and said exterior surface of said body taper linearly from a minimum diameter at the forward end to a maximum diameter at the back end.
