Abstract
Abstract The invention concerns a method and apparatus for making a ball point pen by filling with ink and ink reservoir through an open end opposite the writing end and providing an end closure of heat fusible material which when sealed in the opening provides a compressed air chamber between the ink upper surface in the reservoir and the closure.

A method of manufacturing a ball point pen, comprising filling with ink an elongated ink reservoir having a writing end and an opposite open end, the ink being filled to a level below the open end thereby leaving an air space chamber between the ink surface and the open end of the reservoir, feeding the open end portion of the reservoir through an elongated passage of and terminating in a recessed end portion of a support member until said open end projects through the passage into the recessed portion, initially positioning a fusible closure member having a grooved stem and a cap portion with the grooved stem portion partially within said open end of the reserVoir and with the cap portion spaced therefrom such that the groove defines an opening which permits communication between the air space chamber in the reservoir and the external atmosphere, fitting the recessed end of the support member within a recessed base body to define between inner walls of said recessed end portion of the support member and the inner limiting wall of the recessed base body a second chamber, supplying a fluid under pressure from an external source into said second chamber and into said reservoir through said opening, and moving the end cap into closing relation with the open end of the reservoir while applying energy for fusing the closure to the end of the reservoir.
