Abstract A CELLULOSIC SHEET MATERIAL (PAPER) WHICH EXHIBITS IMPROVED WET STRENGTH COMPRISES ABOUT 5-75% BY WEIGHT POLYMER FIBERS OBTAINED BY FIBRILLATING A COLD-STRETCHED MULTILAYERED FILM COMPRISING TWO OR MORE LAYERS OF DIFFERENT POLYMER COMPOSITIONS AND 25-95% BY WEIGHT CELLULOSIC FIBERS. THE NOVEL CELLULOSIC SHEET MATERIAL IS MADE BY INCORPORATING THE POLYMER FIBERS INTO THE CELLULOSIC FIBERS THEN HEATING TO A TEMPERATURE ABOVE THE MELTING POINT OF THE LOWEST MELTING POLYMER BUT BELOW THE TEMPERATURE OF THE HIGHEST MELTING POLYMER. THIS CELLULOSIC SHEET MATERIAL IS USED IN THE PREPARATION OF PAPER ARTICLES.
