Abstract IN THE METHOD DISCLOSED HEREIN, INFRAERD OPTICAL ELEMENTS ARE FORMED BY HOT FORGING A BOULE GROWN FROM A MOLTEN ALKALI HALIDE. THE BOULE IS HEATED TO A TEMPERATURE AT WHICH NATURALLY OCCURRING SURFACE FISSURES IN THE PARTICULAR ALKYL HALIDE WILL NOT PROPAGATE AND IS THEN WORKED BETWEEN A PAIR OOF DI COMPONENTS TO CONFORM THE BOULE TO THE DESIRED SHAPE.
