Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for drying coal. The coal, in the form of coal particles, is fed into a drying chamber where the coal is suspended in a fluidized bed while being dried in an atmosphere of steam which is at a temperature too low to release oxygen but high enough to extract sulphur from the coal particles. The temperature of the atmosphere in the fluidized bed where the drying of the coal takes place in regulated with heating coils which directly contact the coal particles while the latter are suspended in the fluidized bed, so that further drying is achieved by direct contact between the coal particles and the heating coils. The coal with its reduced sulphur and moisture content is taken in a preheated condition from the dryer and delivered to a coke oven to reduce the extent to which coal must be heated therein. Gas extracted from the dryer is treated to have water condensed therefrom and to extract sulphur therefrom. In addition, pellets of calcium oxide and/or magnesium oxide are delivered to the fluidized bed together with the coal particles for further extracting sulphur from the atmosphere in the fluidized bed, these pellets also being subsequently treated, as by roasting, to extract sulphur therefrom.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 374 words
In a coal drying installation, housing means defining an interior drying chamber closed off from the outer atmosphere, coal feeding means operatively connected with said housing means for feeding to the interior thereof coal particles to be dried in said drying chamber, fluidizing means carried by said housing in the interior thereof beneath said drying chamber for forming a fluidized bed of coal particles in said drying chamber, tubular heating means situated in said drying chamber for controlling the interior temperature thereof and for directly contacting coal particles in the fluidized bed, fluid-supply means communicating with said tubular heating means for supplying heating fluid thereto and wherein said fluid-supply means also communicates with said fluidizing means for supplying to the latter a fluidizing fluid which is the same as the fluid supplied to said tubular heating means, heat-exchanger means operatively connected with said fluid-supply means for heating the fluid supplied thereby to said tubular heating means, coke-cooling means for dry-quenching coke from a coke oven, said coke-cooling means being operatively connected with said heat-exchanger means for delivering to the latter heat to be transferred thereby to the fluid supplied by said fluid-supply means to said tubular heating means, and discharge means operatively connected with said housing means for discharging dry coal from the fluidized bed in said chamber, said tubular heating means including a plurality of upright walls forming paritions which define between themselves relatively narrow spaces in which the fluidized bed of coal particles is located, and said tubular heating means including coils which form parts of said walls and which have a diameter greater than the thickness of said walls so that said coils project laterally from the walls of which they form a part, said coils including elongated substantially horizontal coil portions situated one above the other across the interior of said drying chamber with the horizontal portions of the coils in each wall being interconnected at their ends so that said coils, because they project laterally from the surfaces of the walls of which they form a part serve to deflect the particles to cause them to repeatedly strike against said walls and coils for contributing to the drying action by repeated direct contact with said walls and coIls thereof.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 374 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 61 words
The combination of claim 1 and wherein each of said walls is formed by a pair of flat plates joined together with each plate having outwardly bulging portions forming grooves at an inner side of each plate and corresponding projections at an outer side thereof, said pair of plates being placed together with said grooves in register to form said coils.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 61 words
The combination of claim 1 and wherein said heat-exchanger means and coke-cooling means form a flow path for transferring heat to said heat-exchanger means while said heat-exchanger means and said fluid-supply means form a flow path for transferring heat from said heat-exchanger means to the fluid supplied by said fluid-supply means, and said flow paths being completely independent of each other.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
The combination of claim 1 and wherein said fluidizing means includes a gas-supply means for supplying an inert gas to be used for forming the fluidized bed, said inert gas being different from the fluid supplied to said tubular heating means.
