Abstract A CYANINE DYE HAVING ONE OF THE FORMULAE: 1-((+)M-O-),2-(R1-N-C(-Z1)=CH-),3,4-DI(O=),5-(R2-N(+)-C (-Z2)-CH=)CYCLOPENT-1-ENE X(-) AND 1-((-)O-),2-(R1-N-C(-Z1)=CH-),3,4-DI(O=),5-(R2-N(+)-C(-Z2) -CH=)CYCLOPENT-1-ENE WHEREIN: EACH OF R1 AND R2 IS SELECTED FROM THE CLASS CONSISTING OF LOWER ALKYL, ALLYL, ARALKYL, AND ARYL, EACH OF Z1 AND Z2 REPRESENTS THE ATOMS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE A HETEROCYCLIC NUCLEUS, X- IS AN ANION BUT IS NOT PRESENT WHEN R1 AND/OR R2 CONTAINS AN ANIONIC GROUP, AND M+ IS A CATION, IS DESCRIBED.
