Abstract

Abstract An adjustable support apparatus to hold books or other reading matter in position so as to enable lying or seated individuals to read. The apparatus consists of a transparent plate, preferably of acrylic plastic, which is supported by an adjustable arm attached either to the bed head board or to a portable stand. Shielded tubular light bulbs on each side of the transparent plate may be rotated so as to cast light from either below the plate, or to a position above the plate so that the reading matter may be illuminated for reading from below, or from above the support level.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 216 words
A support apparatus for the purpose of holding books or other reading matter in a position to be illuminated so as to be read by a person without using his limbs to support the reading matter, consisting of a transparent support member affixed by a jointed support arm with attachment means for fastening to a vertical support member, such as a bed headboard or a portable stand, with a shielded light source fixed to a side of said transparent support member so as to illuminate material resting on the transparent support member in order that such reading material may be viewed from either above or below the transparent support member, as desired, in which the shielded light source may be rotated from below the transparent support member, to above the transparent support member, so as to illuminate material resting on the transparent support member from below, or from above the transparent support member, said light source being pivotably mounted in a shielded housing to one side of the transparent support member, with the axis of the pivot of the mounting of the light source being parallel to the fastened side of the transparent support member, together with stop means to fix the light source mounting in a given position with relation to the transparent support member.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 216 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The combination as recited in claim 1 in which two light sources are employed, each pivotably mounted in shielded housings fixed on opposing sides of the transparent support member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 55 words
The combination as recited in claim 1 in which the light source mounting is enclosed in a fixed shield that extends above, to the side of, and below the transparent support member, together with handle means fastened to the light source mounting and extending through the fixed housing to beyond the exterior of the housing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The combination recited in claim 1 in which the transparent support member is a sheet of acrylic plastic.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The combination recited in claim 1 in which the transparent support member is a sheet of polycarbonate plastic.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The combination recited in claim 1 in which the transparent support member is a pane of glass.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The combination recited in claim 1 in which the light source is of tubular construction.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
The combination recited in claim 7 in which the shielded light source is fixed to two opposing sides of the transparent support member.
