Abstract

Abstract A tire building machine, comprising a radially expansible and contractable, breaker-tread assembly building drum having a magnetized outer surface for retaining building alignment of metallic cord breaker plies during building of the assembly, a pair of variably spaced tire carcass support and shaping discs coaxial with but spaced from the building drum and providing for direct inflation of a first stage carcass supported thereon, a radially expansible and contractable and axially movable transfer ring for transferring breaker-tread assemblies from the drum to carcasses on the shaping discs, and movable, conical, shaping rings engageable with the outer sidewalls of the carcass during expansion of the same for limiting such expansion to a symmetrically centered pattern with respect to the breaker-tread assembly and the beads of the carcass. The foregoing abstract is neither intended to define the invention disclosed in this specification, nor is it intended to be limiting as to the scope of the invention in any way.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 210 words
A tire carcass shaping mechanism, comprising first and second axially movable discs adapted to support a tire carcass therebetween, each of said discs having an annular sealing ring fixed thereto at that side of its outer periphery which is remote from the other of said discs, said sealing rings being adapted to sealingly engage corresponding bead areas of said carcass to form with said carcass an inflatable chamber; means for introducing a fluid under pressure to said chamber to expand said carcass; and first and second means associated respectively with said first and second disc members, said first and second means having respective generally conical surfaces flaring towards said carcass during expansion of the latter, each of said first and second means and its associated one of said first and second disc members being cooperatively constructed and arranged to assume a substantially fixed relationship to each other for joint movement toward the other means and its associated disc member during expansion of said carcass, said conical surfaces engaging at least respective major portions of the outer sidewalls of said carcass intermediate the respective bead and shoulder-forming regions thereof during expansion of said carcass for limiting said expansion to a symmetrically centered pattern with respect to the beads of said carcass.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 210 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
A tire carcass shaping mechanism as described in claim 1, and first and second expansion limiting means clamping the bead areas of said carcass against the corresponding sealing rings of said first and second discs to aid in forming said inflatable chamber.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 159 words
A tire carcass shaping mechanism, comprising means including first and second disc members for supporting a tire carcass; means for expanding said carcass from a cylindrical shape to a toroidal shape; and first and second means associated respectively with said first and second disc members, said first and second means having respective generally conical surfaces flaring towards said carcass during expansion of the latter, each of said first and second means and its associated one of said first and second disc members being cooperatively constructed and arranged to assume a substantially fixed relationship to each other for joint movement toward the other member and its associated disc member during expansion of said carcass, said conical surfaces engaging at least respective major portions of the outer sidewalls of said carcass intermediate the respective bead and shoulder-forming regions thereof during expansion of said carcass for limiting said expansion to a symmetrically centered pattern with respect to the beads of said carcass.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
A tire carcass shaping mechanism as described in claim 3, said disc members being sealingly engageable with said carcass to form, together with said carcass, an inflatable chamber, said carcass expanding means comprising means for introducing an inflation fluid into said inflation chamber.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 58 words
