Abstract POLYIMIDES HIGHLY SOLUBLE IN N-METHYL PYROLIDONE ARE PROVIDED. THESE ARE PREFERABLY DERIVED FROM POLYMIDE PRECURSOR SYSTEMS CONSISTING ESSENTIALLY OF THE NONFILMFORMING REACTION PRODUCT OF (A) THE INCOMPLETE REACTION PRODUCT OF BIS-(3,4-DICARBOXYPHENYL) SULFONE DIANHYDRIDE AND A CAPPING AGENT, AND (B) DIAMINE INCLUDING METAPHENYLENE DIAMINE.
