Abstract

Abstract A field applied dead end and method of making same wherein a plurality of preformed helical rods, or wires are secured at one end thereof preferably by encapsulating material within a socket housing. The other ends project from the socket and are disposed to wrappingly engage and thereby grip a line. A core member projects from the socket and is surrounded by the helically formed rods to provide a stop against which the end of the line being gripped abuts.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 173 words
A method of forming a device for gripping a line comprising the steps of providing a socket housing having a cavity therein with at least one opening thereto, providing a plurality of resilient elements having first and second end portions at least the first end portions thereof being helically formed and substantially conforming to each other with respect to pitch length and hand of lay, providing a separate core member, inserting said second end portions of said elements and a portion of said core member into cavity with said elements disposed around said core member with the first end portions of the elements and a part of the core projecting from said one opening with the first end portions extending past the end of said core to provide means for wrappingly engaging the end of a line in gripping relationship therewith, and at least partially filling said cavity with an encapsulating material which will solidify and secure said elements and said core therein with a portion of the elements and core projecting therefrom.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said second portions of said elements are helically preformed, and wherein said second end portions are wound on said core.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the second end portions of the elements are spread out within the cavity before the encapsulating material is introduced therein.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
The method of claim 1 wherein a spreader ring is provided and said spreader ring is inserted over said core and spreads the ends of the elements within the socket before the encapsulating material is introduced.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method of claim 4 wherein the core includes a central bore and openings communicating with said bore, and wherein the encapsulating material is introduced at least in part into said central bore.
