Abstract

Abstract A towed vehicle anti-fishtail control system in which a ferromagnetic ball functions as an acceleration sensing body and is movable in response to lateral acceleration of the towed vehicle, from a central rest position to either side relative to the inclined branches of a path provided by ramp assembles which preferably are movably mounted. Magnetic apparatus is providd for adjustably biasing the ball to hold it in its rest position. Movement of the ball along either path branch results first in actuation of a warning device and then actuation of the towed vehicle''s brakes. Apparatus is also disclosed for releasably trapping the ball at either extremity of its path.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 250 words
An acceleration-responsive device comprising, an acceleration sensing body, housing means, means located within said housing means forming a rest position normally supporting said acceleration sensing body, means forming a predetermined path within said housing and extending from said rest position, switch means mounted within said housing adjacent to said rest position and including two contacts and movable pole means having a bidirectionally deflectable end portion for closing said contacts, elongated lever means having one end thereof connected to said deflectable end portion and at least a part of its length extending parallel to said path in spaced relationship thereto, fulcrum means located at a predetermined point along said path and in contact with said lever means at said predetermined point, said body being moveable in the direction along said path and engaging said lever means in response to an acceleration having a component extending parallel to said path, and means biasing said body to normally remain on said rest position so that at least a predetermined force resulting from the last mentioned acceleration component is required to displace said body, whereby as said body traverses along the direction of the path said movable pole means is deflected in one direction to close one of said contacts as said body engages said lever means between said rest position and said predetermined point and said movable pole means is deflected in the other direction to close the other of said contacts as said body engages said lever means past said predetermined point.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 250 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
An acceleration-responsive device as in claim 1 in which the portion of said path between said rest position and approximately said predetermined point is inclined with respect to said rest position and the remainder of said path has a greater inclination than said first mentioned incline.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
An acceleration-responsive device as set forth in claim 2 in which said biasing means includes magnetic means supported adjacent to said rest position means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
An acceleration-responsive device as set forth in claim 3 which includes means for varying the force exerted by said magnetic means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
An acceleration-responsive device as in claim 1 further comprising terminal means connected to said contacts and accessible externally from said housing means.
