Abstract A METHOD IS PROVIDED FOR THE SEPARATION AND RECOVERY OF METAL-AMINE COMPLEX CATALYST RESIDUES IN A PROCESS FOR THE FORMATION OF POLYHENYLENE ETHERS BY AN OXIDATIVE COUPLING POLYMERIZATION REACTION. THE METHOD COMPRISES EXTRACTING THE CATALYST RERESIDUES BY CONTACT OF THE REACTION SOLUTION WITH CARBONIC ACID SOLUTION, BATCHWISE, OR CONTINUOUSLY IN A CASCADE OF MIXERS-SETTLERS OR A LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION COLUMN.
