Abstract
Abstract METAL CARBONITRIDE COATINGS SUCH AS TITANIUM CARBONITRIDE, ARE PRODUCED UPON THE SURFACE OF AN OBJECT BY A VAPOR PHASE DEPOSITION PROCESS UTILIZING REACTANT COMPOUNDS CONTAINING CARBON, NITROGEN, AND THE METAL. THE REACTANT COMPOUNDS ARE CONTACTED UPON THE SURFACE OF THE HEATED SUBSTRATE UNDER CONDITIONS WHEREIN THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE REACTION ZONE AROUND THE SUBSTRATE IS MAINTAINED AT A TEMPERATURE BELOW THE DECOMPOSITION TEMPERATURE OF THE REACTANT COMPOUNDS SO THAT SUBSTANTIALLY NO VAPOR PHASE REACTION THEREBETWEEN WILL OCCUR BEFORE CONTACT IS MADE WITH THE HEATED SUBSTRATE.
