Abstract

Abstract The invention herein disclosed comprises an improved video tape cartridge, in combination with handling apparatus included in a tape transport of the type having rotatably mounted multiple transducers. The cartridge is of the reel-over-reel type and it is placed into the ejector element of novel handling apparatus comprising an ejector and a carriage. As the cartridge is placed in the ejector, being located by a slot and spline arrangement, a brake within the cartridge housing is released. The carriage is swingably mounted so that it is swung from an inclined position into a vertical position and then displaced forwardly in order to locate a poised span of tape relative to the multiple tranducers. During the movement of the carriage, a lid is opened in order to expose the said span of tape. Additionally, during such movement, clutch formations formed on the reels grasp respective spindles rotatably mounted on the tape transport. As the cartridge is moved into position locator pins on the tape transport register with aligned openings on the face of the cartridge. The cartridge is formed with integral compartments for the reception of tape pick-up elements and a pressure roller.

In a video recorder-reproducer of the helically scanning type, the combination of: a cartridge comprising a rigid housing having a front face formed with a pair of upper index apertures and a lower spindle-receiving aperture, a hinged lid, normally in closed position, on said housing, a tape supply reel and a tape pick-up reel coaxially rotatably supported in superposed relation in said housing, a brake for normally locking the reels in fixed position, a levEr for releasing said brake, said take-up and supply reels being adapted to have a flexible magnetic tape distributively wound thereon, each of said reels being formed with a central annular clutch formation, and first and second spaced tape guides mounted in said housing to poise an inclined span of said magnetic tape, said housing and tape guides being formed to provide for the reception of tape pick-up elements behind said span, and a tape transport comprising a support providing a plane of orientation, spaced index pins projecting from said support, lid-opening means mounted on said support, a plurality of magnetic transducers, tape-contouring means for rotatably mounting said transducers on said support, tape pick-up elements mounted for movement on said support, driving means comprising spindles rotatably mounted on said support, cartridge containing means, the cartridge containing means being formed with splines and the cartridge housing being formed with longitudinal slots which slide along the splines as the cartridge is placed in the containing means, the brake-release lever projecting into one of said slots so as to be actuated by a spline, the tape transport apparatus further comprising means for moving said containing means and said cartridge angularly and then linearly toward the support between a first position inclined relative to said support and a seocnd position in parallelism and adjacent to said support, so that said lid is opened by the lid-opening means and said spindlereceiving aperture receives, and said clutch formations engage, said spindles and said upper index apertures register with said pins and said span of tape is positioned to be withdrawn and helically wrapped on the near face of the tapecontouring means by said tape pick-up elements.
