Abstract
Abstract A continuous process for producing refined sugar from juice extracted from sugarcane or other raw material comprises removing part of the impurities and part of the coloring matter in the juice by the use of a continuous carbonation process, decolorizing the juice by the use of granular active carbon, further removing the impurities and coloring matter remaining in the juice by using a combination of ion-exchange resin and ionexchange membrane electrodialysis, concentrating the purified juice, and crystallizing the concentrated juice to form refined sugar.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
29 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein a portion of the step (d) of concentrating the juice is performed prior to the step (c) of further purifying the juice.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
59 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the step (a) of removing part of the impurities and part of the coloring matter from the juice is carried out by adding milk of lime and carbon dioxide gas to the juice, separating the carbonated juice into clarified juice and cake, carbonating the clarified juice, and filtering the carbonated clarified juice.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
22 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the step c) of further purifying the juice includes the employment of a dechlorination treatment.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
33 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the step (c) of further purifying the juice is carried out by passing the juice through an ion-exchange membrane, a cation tower and a anion tower.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
A process according to claim 5 wehrein the purified juice from the cation and anion towers is dechlorinated, by using an anion exchange resin treatment.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
25 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the step (d) of concentrating the juice is carried out by passing the juice through a multi-effect evaporator.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
29 words
A process according to claim 7 wherein a portion of the step (d) of concentrating the juice is performed prior to the step (c) of further purifying the juice.
