Power driven typewriter with single type head

Claim 2

A typewriter comprising a type member having a plurality of type characters thereon, a device comprising a plurality of cam elements having converging cam walls, said device being operatively connected to said type member and movable to different positions to cause said type member to present different ones of said type characters to a printing position, a plurality of selectively operable character selecting elements, and a plurality of actuators advanceable through predetermined strokes upon operation of respective ones of said selecting elements, each of said actuators engaging one or the other of said converging cam walls of a respective drive element during a said stroke whereby to move said device from any of said positions thereof to a position represented by a said actuator upon movement of said actuator through its said stroke, said converging cam walls having relatively flexible adjacent tip sections, the remainder of said cam walls being relatively rigid, said tip sections flexing upon engagement of the respective actuator therewith.

Claim 3

A typewriter according to claim 1 wherein: each of said actuators is effective to flex both said tip sections of a respective cam element upon movement of said device into a position represented by said last mentioned actuator.

Claim 4

A typewriter comprising a rotatable drive member, a type drum having a hub slideably keyed to said drive member for axial movement therealong, said drum having an outer shell carrying a plurality of type characters thereon and flexible spokes connecting said shell to said hub adjacent one end of said drum; selectively operable character selecting elements, means controlled by said selecting elements for rotating said drive member and axially moving said drum whereby to present different ones of said type characters to a printing position, a printing impression member extending intermediate said hub and said shell, and means responsive to operation of any of said selecting elements for causing said impression member to tilt said shell about said spokes and radially relative to said hub whereby to imprint a said type character at said printing position against a record medium.

Claim 5

A typewriter comprising a rotatable drive member, a type drum having a hub slideably keyed to said drive member for axial movement therealong, said drum having an outer shell carrying a plurality of type characters thereon and flexible spokes connecting said shell to said hub adjacent one end of said drum; selectively operable character selecting elements, means controlled by said selecting elements for rotating said drive member and axially moving said drum whereby to present different ones of said type characters to a printing position, a printing impression member extending intermediate said hub and said shell, and means responsive to operation of any of said selecting elements for causing said impression member to tilt said shell about said spokes and radially relative to said hub whereby to imprint a said type character at said printing position against a record medium.

Claim 6

A typewriter according to clAim 3 comprising means for normally maintaining said impression member out of engagement with said type drum and for causing said impression member to frictionally engage said type drum prior to radial movement of said shell whereby to dampen torsional oscillation of said type drum.

Claim 7

A typewriter according to claim 3 wherein said shell comprises a plurality of slugs, each of said slugs having a said type character on the outer face thereof and flexible bridging connectors connecting said slugs.

Claim 8

A typewriter according to claim 5 wherein said impression member and said slugs have interengaging formations effective to enable said impression member to centralize a said slug and to prevent movement of said last mentioned slug in any direction except an imprinting direction prior to imprinting.

Claim 9

A typewriter according to claim 3 comprising a member stationary relative to said type drum, said stationary member extending between said hub and said shell, and a flange on the end of said drum remote from said spokes and engageable with said stationary member upon radial movement of said shell relative to said hub.

Claim 10

A typewriter according to claim 7 wherein said stationary member is inclined outwardly towards said spokes.

Claim 11

A typewriter according to claim 3 comprising: an annular inwardly extending flange at the end of said drum remote from said spokes, and a wobble reducing member stationary relative to said drum and normally out of engagement with said flange, said wobble reducing member extending between said annular flange and said hub whereby to engage said flange upon wobbling of said drum shell.

Claim 12

A typewriter comprising a rotatable drive member, a type drum having a hub slideably keyed on said drive member for axial movement therealong, said drum having an outer shell carrying a plurality of type characters thereon and flexible spokes connecting said shell to said hub adjacent one end of said drum whereby said shell may be moved radially relative to said hub, selectively operable character selecting elements, means controlled by said selecting elements for rotating said drive member and axially moving said drum whereby to present different ones of said type characters to a printing position, a printing impression member extending intermediate said hub and said shell, pivotal means pivotally supporting said impression member for movement into engagement with said shell whereby to move said shell radially, a first element fixed relative to said impression member, a second element pivotally supported for movement about the axis of movement of said impression member, drive means responsive to operation of any of said selecting elements for rocking said second element a predetermined amount, a wedging member for transmitting angular movement from said first element to said second element, and manually adjustable means for moving said wedging element to vary the angular displacement between said first and second elements.

Claim 13

A typewriter comprising a rotatable drive member, a type drum having a hub slideably keyed on said drive member for axial movement therealong, said drum having an outer shell carrying a plurality of type characters thereon and flexible spokes connecting said shell to said hub adjacent one end of said drum whereby said shell may be moved radially relative to said hub, selectively operable character selecting elements, means controlled by said selecting elements for rotating said drive member and axially moving said drum whereby to present different ones of said type characters to a printing position, a printing impression member extending intermediate said hub and said shell, pivotal means pivotally supporting said impression member for movement into engagement with said shell whereby to move said shell radially, a first element fixed relative to said impression member, a second element pivotally supported for movement about the axis of movement of said impression member, drive means responsive to operation of any of said selecting elements for rocking said second element a predetermined amount, a wedging member for transmitting angular movement from said first element to said second element, and manually adjustable means for moving said wedging element to vary the angular displacement between said first and second elements.

Claim 14

A typewriter according to claim 10 wherein said drive means comprises a pair of cams, one of said cams cooperating with said first element to cause said impression member to frictionally engage said hub whereby to dampen torsional oscillations of said type drum, and the other of said cams cooperating with said second element to cause said impression member to move said drum radially.

Claim 15

A typewriter according to claim 11 comprising: spring means tending to move said impression member into frictional engagement with said hub, and wherein said one cam normally renders said spring means ineffective and renders said spring means effective prior to operation of said other of said cams.

Claim 16

A typewriter according to claim 11 wherein said pivotal supporting means comprises: a rockable shaft fixed to said impression member, said first element being fixed on said shaft, and said second element being pivotally mounted On said shaft.

Claim 17

A typewriter comprising a type drum having a plurality of type characters arranged in two fonts located in different positions around said drum, means supporting said drum for rotation, a first shaft operably connected to said drum, a second shaft, intermeshing gear elements, one of said gear elements being fastened to said first shaft and the other of said gear elements being pivotally supported for movement about the axis of said second shaft, a member fastened to said second shaft, shifting means on said member for changing the angular relation of said other gear element and said member, a plurality of selectively operable character selecting elements, actuating means responsive to operation of any of said selecting elements for rotating said second shaft different amounts whereby to normally cause said type drum to present different type characters in the first one of said fonts representing said selecting elements to a printing position, a manually settable shift control member, and means responsive to setting of said shift control member for actuating said shifting means whereby to enable said actuating means to cause said type drum to present different type characters in a second one of said fonts representing said selecting elements to said printing position.

Claim 18

A typewriter comprising a type drum having a plurality of type characters arranged in two fonts located in different positions around said drum, means supporting said drum for rotation, a first shaft operably connected to said drum, a second shaft, intermeshing gear elements, one of said gear elements being fastened to said first shaft and the other of said gear elements being pivotally supported for movement about the axis of said second shaft, a member fastened to said second shaft, shifting means on said member for changing the angular relation of said other gear element and said member, a plurality of selectively operable character selecting elements, actuating means responsive to operation of any of said selecting elements for rotating said second shaft different amounts whereby to normally cause said type drum to present different type characters in the first one of said fonts representing said selecting elements to a printing position, a manually settable shift control member, and means responsive to setting of said shift control member for actuating said shifting means whereby to enable said actuating means to cause said type drum to present different type characters in a second one of said fonts representing said selecting elements to said printing position.

Claim 19

A typewriter according to claim 14 wherein said shifting means comprises: camming means intermediate said member and said other gear element, and means responsive to setting of said shift control member for actuating said camming means.

Claim 20

A type drum for a typewriter comprising a cylindrical array of spaced relatively rigid slugs, said slugs being arranged in spaced circumferentially extending rows and spaced axially extending columns, each of said slugs having a type character on the outer face thereof, relatively resilient bridging connectors connecting said slugs to form a shell, a relatively rigid hub within said shell and concentric therewith, and, relatively resilient spokes connecting said shell to said hub, each of said spokes being substantially U-shaped.

Claim 21

A type drum for a typewriter comprising a cylindrical array of spaced relatively rigid slugs, said slugs being arranged in spaced circumferentially extending rows and spaced axially extending columns, each of said slugs having a type character on the outer face thereof, relatively resilient bridging connectors connecting said slugs to form a shell, a relatively rigid hub within said shell and concentric therewith, and, relatively resilient spokes connecting said shell to said hub, each of said spokes being substantially U-shaped.
