Abstract
Abstract Sulfur trioxide (SO)3 and/or sulfuric acid mist are removed from the gaseous effluents, particularly those from sulfuric acid plants, by contacting the gas containing such components with a crosslinked, macroreticular, polymeric ion exchange resin containing a vinylpyridine moiety. The resin is a macroreticular weak base resin which can be regenerated with an alkaline material.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim
76 words
A process for removing SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist from a first gaseous stream containing same which comprises contacting said stream with a crosslinked, dry macroreticular vinylpyridine weak base anion exchange resin, the vinylpyridine portion or moiety constituting at least 25 percent by weight of the resin, thereby removing said SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist from said first gaseous stream to produce a second gaseous stream which is essentially free of SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
19 words
A process according to claim 2 wherein the SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist is removed by adsorption and demisting.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
31 words
A process according to claim 3 wherein the SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist is removed by the resin at a temperature in the range of about 50* C. to 100* C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
33 words
Process according to claim 3 wherein the SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist is substantially continuously removed by the resin at a temperature in the range of about 75* C. to about 85* C.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
16 words
Process according to claim 2 wherein the vinylpyridine is 2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinylpyridine or an alkyl substituted vinylpyridine.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
15 words
Process according to claim 4 wherein the vinylpyridine is 2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinylpyridine or an alkylsubstituted vinylpyridine.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
27 words
Process according to claim 5 wherein the vinylpyridine is 2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinylpyridine or an alkylsubstituted vinylpyridine, said vinylpyridine moeity constituting at least about 50 percent of the resin.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
30 words
Process according to claim 5 wherein the resin contains about 91 percent 4-vinylpyridine, and has a porosity of about 0.59 ml./ml. and a surface area of about 6 sq. meters/gm.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
15 words
Process according to claim 9 wherein the resin is crosslinked with about 7 percent divinylbenzene.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
44 words
Process according to claim 10 wherein the resin has a capacity for SO3 and/or sulfuric acid of at least about 7 millimoles (H2SO4 + SO3) per gram of resin and after substantial exhaustion of said capacity, the resin is regenerated with an alkaline material.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
25 words
Process according to claim 2 wherein the resin is in the form of a finely divided particles or beads arranged in a column or bed.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
19 words
Process according to claim 12 wherein the mesh size of the resin is about 20 to about 70 mesh.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
24 words
Process according to claim 2 wherein the resin preferentially removes SO3 and sulfuric acid mist in the presence of SO2 or other acid gases.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
28 words
Process according to claim 14 wherein the SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist are present in the first gaseous stream in an amount of up to about 100 ppm.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
47 words
Process according to claim 14 wherein the SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist are present in the first gaseous stream in an amount of about 15 to 50 ppm. and the second gaseous stream contains about zero (0) ppm. of SO3 and/or sulfuric acid mist (calculated as SO3).
