Abstract A RUBBER LATEX OF SULFONATED BUTYL RUBBER CONTAINING >0.5 MOLE PERCENT SO3H IS PREPARED BY FORMING AN EMULSION OF A SOLUTION OF SULFONATED BUTYL RUBBER IN A SUITABLE SOLVENT USING NON-IONIC EMULSIFIERS AND THEREAFTER STRIPPING OFF THE SOLVENT TO LEAVE A LATEX OF SULFONATED BUTYL RUBBER DISPERSED IN WATER. PRIOR TO STRIPPING THE SOLVENT, THE EMULSIFIERS ARE REMOVED FROM THE SYSTEM BY CENTRIFUGATION, THE SULFONATED BUTYL RUBBER BEING SELF-EMULSIFIABLE, ONCE IT HAS BEEN DISPERSED. PLASTICIZERS ARE ADDED TO THE LATEX TO PREVENT CRACKING OF FILMS PREPARED THEREFROM.
