A method of making a metal impregnated grinding tool
Abstract
Abstract Metal bonded abrasive tools are manufactured in which the abrasive grits are uniformly spaced and distributed throughout the tool, by encapsulating one or several abrasive grits in a porous layer of powdered metallic material and preferably sintering the layer, thereby forming individual abrasive grit containing particles which are then placed in a mold and the spaces between the particles filled with a conventional metallic bonding agent. Heat, and in some instances heat and pressure, is applied which permanently binds the mixture together in the desired form. The process is particularly well suited for the fabrication of metal bonded diamond wheels where the metal-bond to diamond-grit volume ratio is relatively high.
