Abstract

Abstract A shirred stick of sausage casing has a plurality of repetitive zones end-to-end. In one zone each successive pleat is axially and rotationally displaced from its preceding neighbor in a direction counter clockwise to the longitudinal axis of the stick as viewed from one end. In another zone each successive pleat is axially and rotationally displaced from its preceding neighbor in a direction clockwise to the longitudinal axis of the stick as viewed from the same end. In between the two zones is a transition zone in which successive pleats are substantially free of rotational displacement with respect to adjacent pleats. Apparatus for producing such a stick comprises a mandrel secured by movable clamps to a frame, means for feeding tubing to the mandrel, shirring means secured to the frame and associated with the mandrel to shirr the casing, a holdback mounted adjacent to the driving means, and means for reversibly rotating the holdback during shirring of the tubing.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 167 words
A coherent, self-sustaining stick of shirred and compressed sausage casing having a repetitive succession of zones throughout its length; in one of such zones, each successive pleat of such shirred casing being axially and rotationally displaced from its preceding neighbor in a direction counter clockwise to the longitudinal axis of said stick as viewed from its first shirred end and in another of such zones each successive pleat of such shirred casing being axially and rotationally displaced from its preceding neighbor in a direction clockwise to the longitudinal axis of said stick as viewed from its first shirred end, between each of said zones, a transition zone in which successive pleats of such shirred casing are substantially free of rotational displacement with respect to each other, such transition zones being relatively narrow compared to such other zones, and, each zone other than said transistion zones is characterized in that the last pleat of the zone is rotationally displaced about 360* from the first pleat of such Zone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 167 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
A casing stick as defined by claim 1 in which each of said zones other than said transition zones is of substantially the same breadth.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A casing stick as defined by claim 1 in which rotational displacement of each pleat in each of said zones, other than said transition zones, is substantially uniform.
