A novelty yarn comprising a single ground strand of spun staple fibers, and a plurality of relatively short varying length auxiliary strands of staple fibers having a pretwist therein and being randomly arranged along said ground strand, said auxiliary strands being spirally twisted around said ground strand and wherein certain adjacent auxiliary strands are spaced apart lengthwise from each other, and wherein other auxiliary strands have proximal portions which overlap each other.
