Abstract

Abstract Disclosed herein is a piston ring having an improved bearing surface and method of making the same wherein a first layer of hard chromium is electrodeposited on the bearing surface of a piston ring blank, a second layer of microcracked chromium is deposited on the first layer and the second layer of microcracked chromium is etched to provide a finely porous, friable surface, to eliminate the need for lapping of the ring and to promote break-in.
