Abstract
Abstract A mechanism for transferring predetermined lengths of pressuresensitive strip adhesive to objects from a supply of strip adhesive carried on a releasable liner. The device includes means for severing the supply of strip adhesive to form a predetermined length of adhesive, for positioning the length of adhesive on an application surface of a pressure foot, for providing relative movement between the pressure foot and a support surface to press the length of adhesive into contact with an object positioned on the support surface, and for transferring the length of adhesive from the liner to the object.

A mechanism useful for transferring a predetermined length of pressure-sensitive strip adhesive to an object from a supply of strip adhesive carried on a releasable liner, said mechanism comprising: path means for guiding said releasable liner carrying said strip adhesive along a predetermined path, said path means comprising a pressure foot having an application surface defining a length of said path and adapted to contact said liner; severing means mounted along said path for severing said strip adhesive on said liner in advance of said application surface to form a said predetermined length of strip adhesive; advancing means for advancing said liner and said strip adhesive along said path to position said predetermined length of strip adhesive on said application surface; means defining a support surface for supporting a said object in a predetermined relationship with respect to said application surface; moving means for providing relative motion between said application surface and said support surface from a first position with said application surface spaced from said support surface to afford insertion of a said object therebetween to a second position to press said predetermined length of strip adhesive on said application surface into contact with a said object positioned on said support surface; and holding means for maintaining said object on said support surface until after said moving means has begun movement of said surfaces from said second toward said first position.

Dependent Claim
232 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
64 words
the mechanism of claim 1 further including: control means for operating said moving means to apply a said predetermined length of strip adhesive to an object, and to sequentially operate said severing means and said advancing means when said surfaces are in said first position to place a said predetermined length of strip adhesive adjacent said application surface for each operation of said mechanism.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
127 words
The mechanism of claim 1 wherein said severing means comprises: an anvil mounted along said path having the surface thereof in engagement with said releasable liner; a blade mounted along said path for movement between a first position with the edge thereof spaced from said anvil surface to afford movement of said releasable liner carrying the strip adhesive along said path, and a second position affording engagement of said knife edge with said liner on said anvil; biasing means for urging said knife toward said second position adapted to provide sufficient force to sever said strip adhesive without severing said releasable liner; and means for moving said knife from said second to said first position in opposition to said biasing means during operation of said advancing means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
74 words
The mechanism of claim 1 wherein said holding means comprises: a pressure plate having a holding surface adapted for engagement with a said object and being mounted for movement relative to said pressure foot between a first position with said surface extending beyond said application surface toward said support surface and a second position with said application surface essentially aligned with said pressure surface; means for biasing said pressure plate toward said first position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
The mechanism of claim 1 wherein said advancing means includes tensioning means adapted for tensioning said liner across said application surface.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
97 words
The mechanism of claim 1 wherein said advancing means comprises: a first drive roller rotatably mounted along said path in advance of said application surface with the periphery thereof in frictional driving contact with said strip adhesive; a second drive roller rotatably mounted along said path subsequent to said application surface with the periphery thereof in frictional driving contact with said liner; drive means for driving said first roller at a first rate of peripheral speed and said second roller at a second slightly higher rate of peripheral speed, thereby tensioning said liner across said application surface.
