Abstract
Abstract Disclosed is an electrode having a metallic substrate covered by an adhering carbon coating. The metallic substrate consists essentially of magnesium or certain alloys containing magnesium, with the carbon coating being from 50 to 10,000 A thick. The electrodes are compatible with molten alkali metal sulfides since they do not passivate, i.e., lose their conductivity, when placed in contact with the sulfide melts for extended periods of time.
