Abstract ARYLOXY AND ARYLTHIO COMPOSITIONS ARE PREPARED FROM THE REACTION OF A NITRO- OR FLUOROBENZENE CONTAINING A CARBOXY GROUP OR A CYANO GROUP DIRECTLY ATTACHED TO THE BENZENE NUCLEUS WITH AN ALKALI-METAL SALT OF MONOVALENT OR DIVALENT AROMATIC RADICALS IN THE PRESENCE OF A DIPOLAR APROTIC SOLVENT. THE INVENTION ALSO EMBRACES NOVEL DIFUNCTIONAL COMPOUNDS PREPARED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ABOVE-DESCRIBED PROCESS.
