Abstract
Abstract A system for removing gaseous SO2 from the flue gases resulting from the combustion of carbon and sulphur containing fuel, where the absorbent liquid contains magnesium and the product liquid consists of magnesium sulphite crystals. The magnesium sulphite crystals are treated to reduce the water of hydration, and then pelletized with carbon for subsequent thermal treatment to release reactive MgO particles reuseable in the absorption system and a gaseous effluent containing SO2. The gaseous SO2 can then be converted to sulphuric acid or sulphur solids.
