Abstract A WATER-SOLUBLE HYDROXYETHYL OR HYDROPROPYL STARCH IS USED AS CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENT FOR ERYTHOCYTES IN THE LOW SUB-ZERO FREEZE-PRESERVATION OF BLOOD. THE CRYOPROTECTIVE AGENT IS AN EXTRACELLULAR SOLUTE AND IS METABOLIZED IN THE BLOOD STREAM.
