Abstract

Abstract An improved viewing window construction for deep submersible vehicles and a method of construction thereof is disclosed. A hemispherical glass dome is ground and lapped with an edge radius of twice the dome thickness and fitted on a congruently configured mating ring with a bimetallic gasket providing a strain relieving seal therefor.

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 147 words
A viewing port for a deep submergence vehicle comprising in combination: transparent dome means having a convex edge for passing a wide angle of light therethrough; mounting ring means joined to the deep submergence vehicle on one side and concavely lap ground to mate with said convex edge of said transparent dome means on the other side along a radiused interface having a radius substantially greater in length than the thickness of the wall of said transparent dome, said mounting ring means having the same radial deflection characteristics of said transparent dome means for attachment to the hull of said deep submergence vehicle; and bilayer gasket means placed between said transparent dome means and said mounting ring means and for isolating strain transmission therethrough caused by the ratio of Poisson and Yound moduli of the materials from which said transparent dome means and said mounting ring means.
