Abstract
Abstract This disclosure deals with a belt drive assembly for use in suction cleaner. The assembly includes a drive pulley connected to be driven by a drive motor, a driven pulley connected to a rotatable brush roll, and a belt connecting the two pulleys. The outer surface of the driven pulley is divided into high friction portions and low friction portions, the belt exerting a tractive effort only on the high friction portions. The high and low friction portions are proportioned to obtain a driving relationship with the belt under normal load conditions on the brush roll but to slip under overload conditions.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
78 words
A drive for a rotatable brush of a suction cleaner, comprising a drive motor, a drive pulley connected to be rotated by said motor, a rotatably mounted brush roll, a clutch pulley connected to said brush roll, and a belt coupling said drive and clutch pulleys, said clutch pulley being generally circular and including a plurality of circumferentially spaced high friction portions on the outer surface thereof, the spaces between said high friction portions forming low friction portions.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
13 words
A drive as in claim 1, wherein said low friction portions comprise rollers.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
A drive as in claim 1, wherein said clutch pulley is located intermediate the ends of said brush roll.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
19 words
A drive as in claim 1, wherein said clutch pulley is attached to one end of said brush roll.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
19 words
A drive as in claim 1, wherein said clutch pulley has a substantially larger diameter than said drive pulley.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
39 words
A drive as in claim 1, wherein the relative areas of said high and said low friction portions are proportioned to obtain adequate tractive effort under normal load conditions but to enable the belt to slip under overload conditions.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
89 words
In a suction cleaner, the combination comprising a drive motor, a drive pulley connected to be rotated by said motor, a rotatably mounted brush roll, a clutch pulley connected to said brush roll, and a belt coupling said drive and clutch pulleys, said clutch pulley being generally circular and including a plurality of circumferentially spaced high friction portions on the outer surface thereof, and a plurality of rotatably mounted members in the spaces between said high friction portions, said belt engaging both said high friction portions and said members.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
89 words
In a suction cleaner, the combination comprising a drive motor, a drive pulley connected to be rotated by said motor, a rotatably mounted brush roll, a clutch pulley connected to said brush roll, and a belt coupling said drive and clutch pulleys, said clutch pulley being generally circular and including a plurality of circumferentially spaced high friction portions on the outer surface thereof, and a plurality of rotatably mounted members in the spaces between said high friction portions, said belt engaging both said high friction portions and said members.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
29 words
Apparatus as in claim 7, wherein said clutch pulley includes a body on which said members are mounted, said high friction portions comprising the outer periphery of said body.
