Abstract
Abstract A rotatable assembly includes a plurality of writing devices which are selectably moveable into and out of writing position. As the assembly rotates, the writing devices in the writing position describe concentric patterns on a recording medium. The selective movement of the writing devices may be controlled by an array of sensing elements such as light sensors. These may be located on the assembly and may be selectively energized, as the assembly rotates, in response to a smaller stationary group of energy emitting elements located next to the assembly.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
155 words
Apparatus for producing labels on a medium in the form of a pattern of concentric annuli comprising, in combination: means having an axis normal to the medium and including a plurality of Writing means each of which can be selectively placed either in a writing or a non-writing condition, each writing means, in said writing condition, being located at a different radial distance from said axis; means coupled to said writing means and responsive to signals indicative of the pattern to be recorded for placing desired ones of siad writing means in their writing condition and the remaining writing means in the non-writing condition; and means for creating relative rotation in an amount of at least one complete revolution between said medium and said means having an axis, about said axis while all writing means are placed in the desired condition for creating on said medium a binary pattern in the form of concentric annuli.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
The combination as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means for placing said writing means in said writing condition includes means for producing relative movement between selected ones of the writing means and said medium for establishing selected ones in their writing position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
15 words
The combination as set forth in claim 2 wherein said writing means are ball-point pens.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
58 words
The combination as set forth in claim 3 wherein said plurality of ball-point pens are contained in an enclosure which supports each pen laterally but permits movement of the pen in the direction of said axis, said enclosure and pens being easily inserted into and removable from said axis including means to permit replacement of said ball-point pens.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
57 words
The combination as set forth inclaim 2 wherein said writing means are in the shape of stylii and further including a sheet means interposed between said medium and said writing means and having on the surface adjacent said medium ink particles whereby said selected writing means cause ink particles to transfer from said sheet to said medium.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
134 words
Apparatus for producing information bearing labels on a medium in the form of a pattern of concentric annuli comprising, in combinaiton: means having an axis normal to the medium and including a plurality of pens, each of which may be selectively placed into or out of a writing position opposite said medium, each pen when in said writing position being located at a different radial distance from said axis; means coupled to said pens and responsive to signals indicative of the pattern to be recorded by placing different ones of said pens in their writing position; and means for rotating said means having an axis about said axis at least one revolution while selected pens are in said writing position for creating on said medium a binary pattern in the form of concentric annuli.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
246 words
Apparatus for writing a pattern of concentric sectors on a medium comprising: means having an axis normal to the medium and including a plurality of writing means where each of said writing means can be placed either in a writing or a non-writing condition with respect to said medium and where each of said writing means in said writing condition is located at a different radial distance from said axis; means coupled to said writing means operative in response to signals indicative of the pattern to be written for placing desired ones of said writing means in their writing condition; and means for creating relative motion between said medium and said first means about said axis for writing on said medium a binary pattern in the form of said concentric sectors; wherein each of said writing means in writing condition is effective in response to the operation of said means for creating relative motion to write on said medium a sector of given radial dimension and said writing means are disposed with respect to said axis at distances which are evenly spaced and which are positioned such that a sector written by writing means substantially adjoins a sector which may be written by the ones of said writing means next closer to and next further from said axis; in order to write on said medium a pattern in which the radial dimensions of sectors are multiples oF the given radial dimension written by each writing means.
Claim 10
Claim 11
