Abstract

Abstract A dispensing package for a roll of seed tape consisting of a plasticized cardboard backing to which a transparent cover member is hermetically sealed to define a reel cavity. A reel for the seed tape is rotatably carried in the cavity, which includes a tangential outlet through which the tape can be dispensed. The reel consists of a flat circular carboard member, having suitable printed indicia on one face for viewing through the transparent cover, and a plastic spool which cooperates with the cardboard member to carry the tape. Means are provided for locking the reel in a predetermined position to preclude its rotation due to hygroscopic expansion and contraction of the tape, and to thereby maintain the printed indicia in an upright position.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 170 words
A dispensing package for a length of material formed into a coil, comprising: a. a backing member; b. a transparent cover member having a marginal portion affixed to the backing member, the backing member and cover member together defining a protective cavity having an outlet portion; c. a reel for the coiled material having first and second flanges spaced by a spool portion for receiving the coil, the reel being rotatably disposed in the cavity; d. the length of material being wound on the spool portion of said reel with one end leading tangentially therefrom into the outlet portion of said protective cavity; e. first means associated with the reel for removable securing a portion of said length of material thereto; f. and second means associated with said outlet portion for removably securing the leading end of said length of material therein; g. said first and second means cooperating with the length of material to prevent rotation of the reel until said material is removed therefrom to release the reel.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 170 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 48 words
The dispensing package defined by claim 1, wherein at least one flange on the reel is formed from flexible material, and the first means comprises a slot disposed in the flange opening at the edge thereof, the slot being arranged to receive and retain said portion of material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The package defined by claim 2, wherein the slot is open on the flange edge at essentially the tangential point at which the length of material leads from the reel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The dispensing package defined by claim 2, wherein said one flange is notched at the edge thereof adjacent the slot to facilitate removal of said portion of material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 41 words
The package defined by claim 1, wherein the outlet portion is elongated in shape, and the second means comprises a neck formed within the outlet portion and sized to receive and frictionally retain the leading end of said length of material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
The package defined by claim 5, wherein said material comprises a length of tape, and the neck of said outlet portion is dove-tailed in cross-section.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
The package defined by claim 1, wherein the backing member is formed from essentially flat cardboard.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 45 words
The package defined by claim 1, wherein: a. at least a portion of the backing member is plasticized; b. the transparent cover member comprises plastic; c. and the marginal portion of the cover member is heat sealed to the plasticized portion of the backing member.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
The package defined by claim 8, wherein the outlet portion is elongated in shape and terminates in an unsealed tab permitting the outlet portion to be lifted from the backing member.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 40 words
The package defined by claim 8, wherEin the outlet portion is elongated in shape and further comprises oppositely disposed unsealed areas within said marginal portion to permit the outlet portion to bend as it is lifted from the backing member.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 83 words
The package defined by claim 1, wherein: a. the outlet portion is elongated in shape; b. the second means comprises a neck formed within the elongated outlet portion sized to receive and frictionally retain said material; c. and the leading end of the material is sufficiently long to extend beyond said elongated outlet portion, the leading end being doubled back for retention within said neck, whereby the leading end can be released outwardly with lifting of the outlet portion from the backing member.
