Method of roasting copper sulphide concentrates and ores
Abstract
Abstract A method of roasting copper-iron-sulphide ore concentrate or mixture, wherein the ratio of sulphur values to copper values is preferably at least one, to yield a calcined product, for the separation and recovery of copper values by acid leaching and electrolytic deposition, having at least 99 percent of its copper values soluble in dilute sulphuric acid and no more than 10 percent of the iron values soluble in dilute sulphuric acid. The method comprises oxidizing the concentrate in the following three step reaction sequence: 1) 1-1.5 hours at a temperature between about 280* and about 360*C; 2) 1-1.5 hours at a temperature between about 475* and about 540*C; and 3) 0.5-1.0 hour at a temperature between about 640* and about 690*C.
