Abstract

Abstract An improved cylindrical bearing material of a laminated construction can be made by employing a plurality of alternating cylindrical shells of elastomer and metal laminated together in which each metal shell is formed by helically winding a band of the metal in an edge-wise, abutting relationship to form a cylindrical metal shell or sleeve. the resulting bearing material, composed of a plurality of alternating concentric elastomeric and metallic shells can be confined between a cylindrical core and an outer cylindrical retaining ring to form a bearing assembly in which the bearing material may be placed under a radial pre-load, if desired, to decrease its radial deflection when it is placed under radial loads. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the adjacent metal shells are wound in opposite directions to stabilize the bearing material under torsional loading.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 127 words
A method of making a cylindrical bearing material with low radial deflection characteristics and uniform torsional response and having at least two concentric metallic cylindrical bearing shells separated by an elastomer bearing shell comprising: helically winding a first metal band in an edge-abutting relationship around a cylindrical mandrel to form a first metallic cylindrical bearing shell having a constant diameter; applying a layer elastomer on the outer surface of said first metallic cylindrical bearing shell to form an elastomer cylindrical bearing shell; and helically winding a second metal band in an edge-abutting relationship over said first metallic cylindrical bearing shell to form a concentric second metallic cylindrical bearing shEll to a constant diameter with the elastomer layer sandwiched between said first and second metallic cylindrical bearing shells.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
The method as described in claim 1 wherein the first and second metal bands are coated on at least one side with an elastomer coating of uniform thickness whereby the elastomer cylindrical bearing shell is formed as said bands are helically wound.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method as described in claim 1 wherein the metal bands are maintained under tension as each metallic cylindrical bearing shell is helically wound on the immediately preceding cylindrical bearing shell.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method as described in claim 3 wherein the elastomer cylindrical bearing shells are applied in the uncured state and subsequently cured after the cylindrical laminate is completed.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 34 words
The method as described in claim 3 wherein each metal band is cold-worked over dies before it is helically wound to curl said bands to a configuration approximating its lay in the bearing material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
The method as described in claim 1 wherein adjacent metallic cylindrical bearing shells are helically wound in the opposite direction whereby the resulting helical seams in the resulting metallic cylindrical bearing shells are angularly disposed with reference to one another.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method defined in claim 1 wherein the metal bands have a thickness from 0.0015 to 0.020 inch and the elastomer layer has a thickness from 0.005 to 0.060 inch.
