Abstract

Abstract Knockout pins in the opposed dies are employed to receive and index the stock between and in spaced relation to the dies, after which the dies are closed upon the work while overriding the knockout pins. For forming a symmetrical workpiece a single knockout pin is disposed centrally of each die and is provided with a conical protrusion centrally thereof registering with a corresponding central conical depression in the stock.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 91 words
The method of locating a stock piece in a set of forming dies, comprising disposing a stock piece between the open dies, gripping the stock piece by knockout pins extending in alignment loosely through the dies and having interlocking registry means laterally centering the stock piece relative to said pins, initially closing the dies upon said stock piece while overriding said knockout pins and centering the knockout pins and stock piece relative to the dies, and further closing the dies upon the stock piece to complete the forming of a workpiece.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 91 words
The method of locating a stock piece in a set of forming dies, comprising disposing a stock piece between the open dies, gripping the stock piece by knockout pins extending in alignment loosely through the dies and having interlocking registry means laterally centering the stock piece relative to said pins, initially closing the dies upon said stock piece while overriding said knockout pins and centering the knockout pins and stock piece relative to the dies, and further closing the dies upon the stock piece to complete the forming of a workpiece.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method of claim 1 in which hydraulic actuation of said knockout pin yields under the greater force of said die closing and is continued upon opening of the dies to effect separation of the formed piece from the dies upon retraction of the dies.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 81 words
Apparatus for locating a stock piece in a set of forming dies, comprising a knockout pin loosely mounted in each die, means to actuate said knockout pins to grip the stock piece between the open dies, means to accurately locate the stock piece relative to each said knockout pin, means to close the dies upon the stock piece while so gripped, and means to accurately locate each said knockout pin relative to its die as the latter engages the stock piece.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 81 words
Apparatus for locating a stock piece in a set of forming dies, comprising a knockout pin loosely mounted in each die, means to actuate said knockout pins to grip the stock piece between the open dies, means to accurately locate the stock piece relative to each said knockout pin, means to close the dies upon the stock piece while so gripped, and means to accurately locate each said knockout pin relative to its die as the latter engages the stock piece.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
The apparatus of claim 3 in which said knockout pin actuation is effected hydraulically and yields upon closing of the dies to effect overriding of the same whereby upon reopening of the dies after forming of the piece the knockout pins serve to remove the formed piece from the dies.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
The apparatus of claim 3 in which each knockout pin has a generally conical protrusion on its face to interlock with a corresponding complementary recess in the stock piece.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
The apparatus of claim 3 in which said last named means comprises a generally frusto-conical head on each knockout pin adapted to fit into a complementary recess in the face of the corresponding die.
