Abstract A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING HEXACHLOROCYCLOPENTADIENE (HCCP) IN A SINGLE STAGE THERMAL CHLORINATION REACTION WHEREIN N-PENTANE AND CHLORINE ARE REACTED AT 275-400* C. IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST COMPRISING POROUS ALUMINA HAVING A LOW SURFACE AREA OF FROM ABOUT 0.4 M.2/G. TO ABOUT 30 M.2/G. AND CAN CONTAIN SPECIFIED METAL CHLORIDES. THIS PROCESS IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR PRODUCING HCCP FROM CHLORINE AND OTHER C5 HYDROCARBONS.
