Abstract

Abstract An L-shaped bracket is attached to a vertical structural member of a bicycle. Pivotally attached to the bracket is a plate which folds between a raised or a lowered position and latches in either of these two positions. A second embodiment incorporates an adjustable sliding collar which causes a strut to be fixed in either a raised or a lowered position. Auxiliary wheels are mounted on the plate in the first embodiment and at the end of the strut in the second embodiment. A third embodiment of the invention involves a wheel on a bracket which rotates from a lowered position into a raised position.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 266 words
Auxiliary bicycle wheels comprising means for mounting a single bracket on each side of the rear axle of said bicycle with a selective verticle height adjustment, said bracket on each side comprising an aperture fitting over the ends of said axle, stabilizing means comprising a plate shaped to fit around at least some bicycle frame members, means for supporting an auxiliary wheel on each of said brackets, said brackets including means for pivotally moving said auxiliary wheels around an axis in a plane normal to the said rear axle, said auxiliary wheels moving between either a raised or lowered position, latch means for latching said wheels in either of said positions, said single bracket comprising a pair of L-shaped members, inverted with respect to each other, a first arm of one L-shaped member on one bracket being hinged inside the angle of the other L-shaped member, the other arm of said one L-shaped member having an auxiliary wheel attached thereto, a first arm on the other L-shaped member being attached to said rear axle, a second arm on the other L-shaped bracket member fitting under and supporting said other arm of said one L-shaped member when said auxiliary wheel is in said lowered position, said latch means comprising at least one first member on said first arm of said one L-shaped member and mating members on said first and second arms of said other L-shaped member, whereby the first member engages said mating members at the extremities of motion provided by said hinge, and spring bias means for holding said engagement between the mated latched members.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 266 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The auxiliary bicycle wheels of claim 1 wherein said auxiliary wheels have tires made from resilient rubber-like material, said tires projecting outwardly when retracted to extend from said bicycle and make first engagement with nearby objects if said bicycle is ridden too close to said nearby objects, thereby protecting said objects from damage.
