Carriers, utilizing wheel supports, hold downs and loaders for two wheel vehicles carried on cars, trucks, and other vehicles
Abstract
Abstract For carrying two wheeled vehicles, wheel supports, in pairs, with and without cross tracks and ramps, are attached to front or rear bumpers of cars, station wagons, pick-up trucks or other vehicles having suitable appendages. Each wheel support carrier properly spaced, mounted and adjusted will support the weight of an entire two wheeled vehicle. After tie downs are secured to holding posts of the wheel supports or otherwise secured, the two wheel vehicle so secured is ready for safe transport during travel on arterials and backwoods trails. Initially each wheel support is readily mounted or detached to a vehicle bumper by adjusting only two fastening assemblies, and thereafter only one fastener assembly need be adjusted. Each wheel support carrier is readily adjustable to change the size of its receiving laterally tire surrounding loop support to match a tire and wheel size. An adjustable bottom support is also provided to regulate how deeply a wheel and tire are to be lowered down through the laterally surrounding loop support and down into the overall wheel support, to further compensate for different sizes of wheels and tires on different two wheel vehicles to be carried by a pair of wheel support carriers mounted on a four wheeled vehicle. Loading and unloading of smaller two wheeled vehicles is easily accomplished by two people lifting in unison or sometimes by one person. However, when a large high powered two wheel vehicle is to be transported, loading and unloading is preferably accomplished by using a ramp and cross track to wheel the two wheel vehicle on and off from the four wheel vehicle. The design of the individual wheel supports is modified to accommodate the addition of a cross track suspended between the two wheel supports or carriers and also the addition of a loading and unloading ramp. When the four wheel vehicle is to be operated the loading ramp is conveniently stowed under the cross track and secured to it. At the destination, the ramp is removed, one loop of a wheel support is rotated down to below the cross track and the ramp is connected above to the cross track and rested below on the ground. Then the two wheel vehicle is easily and safely unloaded as it is wheeled down. Under all conditions of when the four wheeled vehicle is in motion and carrying a two wheeled vehicle either at its front or back the lateral stability of the two wheeled vehicle is provided by tiedowns connected tightly to the upright supports secured in turn to the wheel support carriers.
