Abstract

Abstract A splice for toothed power transmission belts having connecting pins for holding the abutting ends of the belt together. The connecting pins each pass through a tooth of the belt in the splice region. The pin is placed in adjacent proximity to the tension cords in the belt so that these reinforcement cords will acquire the load transmitted to the pin. As a result, a stronger and more durable splice is achieved. The above splice may also be used for repairing damaged or worn belts by inserting a new piece of belt having a splice at each end.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 123 words
In a splice for a toothed power transmission belt having reinforcement cords running longitudianlly along said belt, said splice having a configuration of the type featuring interengaging male and female tongues interlocked in abutting ends of said belt, and at least one connecting pin extending transversely of said belt and inserted through said tongues to lock the belt ends together, the improvement wherein: each pin extending through a respective tooth member within the splice configuration, each of said connecting pins disposed immediately below and within adjacent proximity to said reinforcement cords, whereby a load experienced by each tooth within the splice configuration will be transmitted via the respective pins to said reinforcement cords resulting in a splice with a greater load carrying capacity.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 123 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The splice of claim 1, wherein the splice configuration is further defined as a dado configuration.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The splice of claim 1, wherein the pins do not extend completely across the belt, whereby pin ends will not protrude from sides of the belt and mar pulley walls.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The splice of claim 1, wherein the pins are interference or press fitted, whereby they will not tend to ''''walk out'''' of said belt.
