Abstract

Abstract A body of sintered metal oxide material having first and second opposed surfaces and a third surface disposed therebetween has first and second electrodes in contact with the first two opposed surfaces for establishing a main conductive path through the device and a third electrode in contact with one of the two opposed surfaces and spaced very close to the corresponding electrode for establishing a monitoring conductive path for sensing the operating temperature of the body as a function of the resistance thereof. The monitoring path may also be established by a pair of third electrodes positioned on opposite sides of the surface interconnecting the first two surfaces whereby the monitoring path intersects the main conductive path. The sintered metal oxide material has varistor characteristics.
