Abstract

Abstract Inertial energy storage apparatus having two contrarotating rotors the fellies of which include a number of thin rings of high tensile strength material, such as glasses or embedded fiber composites, arranged in concentric shells, the ratio of the Young''s Modulus to the density of the material of each ring being proportional to the nth power of its mean radius, where n is not equal to zero, so that the radial separations between successive shells of rings produced by centrifugal force are reduced as compared with those produced when n is zero (e.g., all rings of the same material). The rotors have alternator-motors in their hubs, by means of which they can be brought to speed, and by means of which the inertial energy stored in them can be extracted in the form of variable-frequency alternating output voltage. This output voltage may be converted by a solid-state cycloconverter to alternating current of selectively variable frequency by means of which to power, for instance, the threephase, squirrel-cage wheel motors of a non-pollution-producing vehicle.
