Abstract In a vehicle automatic transmission of the type which performs the setting of shift points through electrical controls, a control system designed such that the transmission starts in the third speed under low engine load conditions, while the transmission starts in the first speed under high engine load conditions.

In a vehicle automatic transmission comprising a speed change gear aNd engaging means with hydraulic servos for accomplishing the gear changing operations of the speed change gear, a control system comprising: hydraulic pressure supply control means for controlling the supply of hydraulic pressures to said engaging means hydraulic servos vehicle driving condition responsive electrical signal generating means, shift control means responsive to said vehicle driving condition responsive electrical signals for generating electrical signals to actuate said hydraulic pressure supply control means, and drive speed setting means responsive to the vehicle driving condition responsive electrical signals including at least a low engine load signal so as to generate electrical signals for engaging the transmission in the third speed gear irrespective of the electrical signals generated by said shift control means.
